Glendalough: the Land of Magic

Glendalough: the Land of Magic

Posted by admin on July 8, 2023 12:27 am / 0 Comments

Of course it took me an eternity to finally process & upload those photos from Glendalough, but here they are, at last.

A bright (and, most importantly, dry!) autumn day when I joined a Meetup to walk these truly enchanted trails of Glendalough.

Many have asked (no, really, they did!) what it is that keeps me in Dublin, despite the hardships (most notably the absurd housing market and the incredibly poor public transport system).

The deer and the birds and the rabbits and the foxes told me to stay.

So here it is, a bit of Ireland’s magic, 📷 Tamron 70-300mm.

LOOP HIKE: We started at the Lower Lakes, with a quick tour of the Monastic City, then past the lower lake and upper lake, passing through Van Diemen’s Land Mines and then ascending the valley before circling around Derrybawn mountain, passing over St Kevin’s bed.

A quick stop at St Kevin’s Kitchen.

St. Kevin’s Church better known as St. Kevin’s Kitchen is a nave-and-chancel church of the 12th century. It is called St Kevin’s kitchen because people believed that the bell tower was a chimney to a kitchen but really no food was ever cooked there. From Visit Wicklow.

Moving forward, to the lake:

It’s so difficult to keep up with the group when you’re the only one taking photos (but who cares 😂)

And, to the peak!

But who is waiting for us there? (melted 😭)

Quick look down at those macro worlds… but not too much, cuz the group had already vanished!

I absolutely love it how the Irish care for their trails (and nature overall!), installing these wooden planks, that used to belong to the former rail lines, to prevent soil erosion. Wow!

Some more from visitwicklow.ie: Carved by the melting ice of an ancient glacier, the Glendalough Upper Lake is one of the most scenic location in Wicklow and Ireland.  The beauty and remoteness of Glendalough is what attracted St Kevin in the 6th century.  After spending several years as a hermit in a cave along the lake, St Kevin later founded a monastic site whose influence lasted a thousand years.

This looked like a savanna, I was expecting a zebra to pop-up any minute:

The people were already down in the parking lot (why such a rush, dude!) and I couldn’t stop taking shots 🤷

That’s all folx!

Let’s see how it looks in summer time, all green & lush 🌿🌿🌿
